Last week was my BFF’s birthday. Last year I made her candy “cupcakes”. This year I made her a whole cake.
I searched for a cake slice pattern and found this one. She doesn’t live close to a craft store so I decided to fill each slice of her “cake” with craft supplies. Here is how I make the slices.
1. For the base I chose a chocolate brown scrapbook paper. It’s a little thicker than regular paper but not as thick as cardstock. I traced my cake base pattern 10 times.
2. Then I cut out the bases.
3. I kept the pattern in front of me and used a ruler to help bend creases in the slice for folding according to the dashed lines.
4. Once I made all the creases, I bent the edges into shape.
5. I cut a large glue spot in half and placed each half on opposite ends of the edge. I folded and glued the flaps to form the base.
6. My cake base.
I did the same thing with the cake “frosting”.
1. For the top I chose a white, iridescent scrapbook paper. It’s also a little thicker than regular paper but not as thick as cardstock. I traced my cake top pattern 10 times.
2. Then I cut out the tops.
3. I kept the pattern in front of me and used a ruler to help bend creases in the slice for folding according to the dashed lines.
4. Once I made all the creases, I bent the edges into shape.
5. I cut a large glue spot in half and placed each half on opposite ends of the edge. I folded and glued the flaps to form the tops.
6. My cake top.
For the flower decoration I used a pink floral paper and cut two flowers with my flower-shaped punch. I glued one on top of the other, curled the edges and glued a small circle from a regular hole punch to the center of the flower. I glued the flowers to the top of each “slice”.
FYI: Glue dots/spots (whichever brand you use) is the easiest and less messy way of putting these boxes together!
I filled each box with beads, buttons, embroidery floss, and ribbons.
I arranged the boxes into as tight of a circle as I could get and tied a ribbon around the middle to hold them together in the cake shape.
I cut a piece of foam to fit the box I was mailing the cake in so she could easily lift the cake out and kept the cake shape intact.
I told her a few days before I mailed it that I was working on something for her and it was coming out so cute that I was having a hard time not keeping it for myself. Hee hee!
